The information on this website cannot, and should not, replace the conversation between the healthcare professional and the patient. Versatis® is a prescription only medication. Only the healthcare professional can decide which treatment option is the most appropriate for the patient. Individual treatment results with Versatis® may vary.

Frequently asked questions about using Versatis® for the treatment of PHN:

    When to use Versatis®?
Versatis® is indicated for the symptomatic relief of neuropathic pain associated with previous herpes zoster infection(postherpetic neuralgia, PHN) in adults. 1
What does "Works where it hurts" mean?
The Versatis® plaster is applied only to the directly affected painful area - which is the area where the active substance lidocaine is released and can penetrate through the skin. 1 It reaches the damaged nerves under the skin where it blocks abnormal sodium channels. This analgesic effect results in the patient experiencing pain relief.2
What are typical symptoms of post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN)?
Post-herpetic neuralgia is a type of localised neuropathic pain. Many patients report burning, stabbing or shooting pain. 2,9
    How effective is Versatis®?
Clinical data indicates that Versatis® achieves a 62% responder rate with over 80% of responding patients experiencing pain relief within the first two weeks.2,3 Four-year clinical data confirms the sustained long-term efficacy of Versatis.® 4
How quickly can patients expect to experience pain relief with Versatis®?
Of those patients who respond to Versatis®, over 80% experience pain relief within the first two weeks. 2 Generally, it may take 2-4 weeks until Versatis® shows optimal effect. If there has been no response to Versatis after this period, treatment should be discontinued. 1
How long should Versatis® be in contact with the skin?
It is important that Versatis® is in contact with the skin for a maximum of 12 hours in any 24 hour period. However, due to the mechanism of action which releases lidocaine and blocks abnormal sodium channels of the damaged nerves, pain relief effect is maintained for the 24 hour period. 1,2
Should Versatis® be used during the day or at night?
Both are viable options.1 Patients should choose the option that is best for them. The plaster has the additional advantage of offering a physical barrier protecting the sensitive skin area against a painful stimulus. This stimulus can be a shirt, a belt or even the touch of other people. This is why some people prefer to wear Versatis® during the day time. On the other hand, some patients prefer to use Versatis® overnight due to aesthetic reasons - for example when the painful area is in a very obvious place like the face.
Can the Versatis® plasters be reused?
No, each Versatis® plaster is intended for single use only.1
Can Versatis® be used on any part of the body?
Versatis® can be used on the body on areas of pain after the shingles rash has healed. It should not be applied to mucous membranes, on injured skin, open wounds or areas of ongoing shingles infection. Versatis® can be used on the face, although not on, or near, the eyes or mouth. 1
Does using Versatis® restrict a patient's everyday activities?
Patients can pursue most of their everyday activities whilst using Versatis®, including driving or operating machinery. However, direct contact with water should be avoided.1
Because Versatis® is a topical treatment with minimal absorption, it has a low rate of systemic side effects and is easy for patients to use. 1
Is Versatis® recommended as a first-line treatment option?
Yes, Versatis® is indeed recommended as a first-line treatment option for post-herpetic neuralgia in the elderly by the European Federation of Neurological Societies (EFNS) Guidelines. 6
How many patients have already benefited from this therapeutic principle?
It has been estimated that this targeted treatment option has been used in more than 18 million patients worldwide. 5
